The movie follows the filmmaker and evolutionary biologist Randy Olson as he steps into one of America’s most contentious scientific debates—not simply to argue for evolution, but to explore why scientists so often fail to communicate the topic effectively. Through humor, personal stories (including his mother who steals the show), interviews with advocates from both sides, and cartoon dodos, Olson reveals that the conflict is driven as much by culture, language, and public perception as by scientific evidence. The film pulls the curtain back on Intelligent Design to reveal its connections to creationism, money, and the conservative think tank the Discovery Institute. Rather than portraying clear heroes and villains, the documentary allows advocates on both sides to have their say, often to moments of hilarity.
The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, played at film festivals worldwide, was in rotation at ShowTime in the US for two years, was ranked one of the top ten science documentaries of the 2000s by Smithsonian Magazine, and praised by the journal Nature and other publications.
